EUROPE’S PALATIAL WONDER
Call us intrepid explorers or simply wanderlusters after something a little different, we love to travel. As the destination experiencing something of a renaissance, Malta caught our eye this summer. From the crystal-clearest, turquoise waters, sensational beaches and history that’s unrivalled to many of its European counterparts, Malta offers so much and more.
Shaking off its package holiday and millennial party-goer reputation, Malta has undoubtedly found a new groove. In particular is its capital city Valletta. A World Heritage site and recently voted Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2018, Valletta is nothing short of an open-air museum.
Exhibiting Baroque architecture in its finest form, the city is transforming itself from a traditional monument to a vibrant destination. This wonderland of narrow cobbled streets pave the way to a city of character, creativity and romance. With the weather here turning on its chill factor, it’s time to start thinking about your sun-drenched summertime getaway now with Valetta no-better-a-place.
And so, our attention turns to one of its finest design jewels by form of the Palais Le Brun Hotel. Sitting close to the tip of the Valletta peninsula and located on Old Bakery Street within a converted 16th-century palazzo originally constructed for a Grand Master of the Order of St John, this recently opened boutique hotel is full of both contemporary charm and rich Maltese history.
Housing 28 bedrooms in total, Palais Le Brun has a sophisticatedly minimalist décor of whitewashed walls and classic furnishings. As a nod to the fortified city’s history, much of the hotel exhibits original Baroque architecture with luxurious local marble running throughout. . Adorned with antique maps and historic photographs, a sense of Valletta’s naval past reigns supreme while contemporary design pieces pay homage to the hotel’s modernity.
Many of the rooms feature expansive balconies and terraces offering immense city views. If you’re lucky, you may also discover a private hot tub, too. The real star of the show is on the hotel’s rooftop where an exclusive bar, lounge terrace and plunge pool await. Offering 180-degree views of the city amidst a backdrop of cool bossa nova beats and mimosa cocktails to be drunk, it’s the chicest of spaces to escape the crowds, heat and the city.
Downstairs, the hotel’s cellar floor grants hotel guests use of its private gym and access to its on-site Patakka Restaurant. As one of the city’s most-celebrated cuisine hotspots, Patakka is a celebration of traditional Maltese history yet with a contemporary twist to its menu of ‘grandmother’s’ recipes.
With food and design spaces too delectable to refuse, you’ll be hard-pressed to leave.
